In the last episode, we saw that Iron Fist Ketil easily lost the battle against the trained Vikings of King Canute. The fight came to a halt after the farmers retreated for their safety. Now this came down to the next head of the family as Ketil was in no position to decide what should be done next for the battle.
Olmar was named the next head of the Ketil Clan and he decided to surrender to King Canute instead of continuing the fight. His brother Thorgil was furious about this decision as he wanted to continue fighting but he then left without saying a word to his brother. Thorfinn also went to talk to his old buddy Canute but looked like Canute was not so interested in that meeting.

Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 21 Recap
In the previous episode, we saw that Ketil’s amateur army lost the battle very easily and there were too many casualties to fight this small. Jomvikings commander asked King Canute to attack the village as this was the traditional way but Canute declined to say that they do not have an answer from the Ketil Clan yet.
Einar who was devastated by the death of Arnheid realized that Thorfinn is about to do something stupid. Olmar witnessed the destruction of the battle and was not able to stand it even for a moment. Things then came down to Olmar to decide what to do next with the ongoing battle as his father Iron Fist Ketil was in no position to take a decision.
Olmar was named as his successor and Olmar decided to surrender to the royalty despite knowing the fact that his brother Thorgil wants to fight. Snake said that he will be supporting the head of the family in whatever decision he takes.
Thorgil then left without saying anything. Thorfinn found himself surrounded by Canute’s soldiers and his request to meet Canute was declined. It looked like the King himself did not want to meet Throfinn. This confrontation soon turned into a game for soldiers as they started betting on how many punches Thorfinn could withstand.
He then also bet on himself and it came down to one hundred punches. If he could withstand one hundred punches from the soldier from King’s guard he will be granted permission to meet King Canute. Einar was worried about him but he said to Einar that he is returning what this farm gave to him and he is used to getting punched.
